Know Your Vehicle And Stay On Top Of Things

The transmission of a car is key in determining its operation and its effectiveness. Such information can also enable you to determine the exact car that suits your need. Often described as one of the most complex parts, it is as integral to a car’s movement as the spine is to human’s. Learning about the workings of a car will not only help you determine the right car to go for, but it will also help you utilize and manage your car (existing or to be- purchased). This article is written to teach you done terminologies that will help you.

Terms You Should Know

The transmission is often called the gearbox, it is the part charged with powering the wheels by connecting them with the engine. Apart from spinning the wheels, it uses the engine power produced to keep the engine within a set RPM (revolutions per minute) range. This range differs between cars, hence your vehicle is tuned to the transmission that suits it. If your vehicle is front-wheeled, rear-wheeled or an all-wheel drive, this will determine where its gearbox sits and its arrangement.

Automatic and Manual Systems

This cannot be neglected when discussing this concept in cars. The automatic system is designed such that the driver doesn’t have to change gears. The manual system empowers the driver with more control with the selection and switching of gears.

This mechanical device enables the wheels to disengage from a car’s engine without stopping. The gears and the engines rotate at equal speeds when engaged. The gears turn when the flywheel and clutch plate connects. Although, the clutch is attached to the gearbox while the flywheel to the engine.

Torque Converter

A manual car is designed with a clutch. In automatic systems, there is no clutch. In place of a clutch in such systems, is the torque converter. This enables the running of the car even when stopped. It is positioned between the engine and the gearbox itself. Albeit outside the gearbox, it is an integral part as it functions to consistently keep the speed of the engine in the optimal range.

Hydraulic System

The transmitting gear system of a car is highly functional. To ensure its performance is optimized, the hydraulic system is required. This is essential in lubricating parts, controlling gear shifting and cooling every part of the system. The fluid added to a car’s engine goes into the hydraulic system. The hydraulic system uses the fluid to pressurize the car, hence keeping it on the move.

Planetary Gear Sets

It consists of a central gear known as the sun gear and other two gears described as planet gears, held together by a ring. With the sun gear maintaining a constant position while the planet gears keep finding their way around it. That brings the solar system to mind, right? Hence its name. The revolutions per minute ratio (RPM) of a car’s engine is kept in the right range by the planetary gear sets. These gears also connect the input shaft to the RPM.

These terminologies will not only help you get the best of your car, you won’t be confused when you take your vehicle out for repairs, and you will know what the issue is.
